Veterinary Handbook Contents 6.4 Water Supply ProblemsThere is a risk of water delivery systems breaking down, especially if taps, pipes and electrical coverings are corroded. This may be a greater problem on older vessels that have been regularly cleaned for years with salt water, or on a maiden voyage when systems have not been tested under voyage conditions. Water supply systems may become inadequate during very hot weather when demand is high. This may be exacerbated by inadequate water trough space or on upper decks during peak periods of thirst or when water troughs are being cleaned and refilled. In crowded pens, access to water troughs or drinker bowls may be difficult. This is especially a problem when drinker bowls are located in corners of pens. One or two animals standing in the corner can block access by others. Horned animals may be unable to put their heads between pen rails to reach troughs and small animals may be unable to reach elevated troughs. Areas of a deck may be turned off inadvertently, during cleaning and maintenance of troughs, or to facilitate repairs to water lines. BackNext
